“My Black Paintings are all about light. Black is a spacious color, almost a void. The paintings are never static - they interact with patterns and symbols on the surface and as the series develops,s the shapes do too. Initially, I worked with two dimensions; now I paint in three dimensions and feel there are other dimensions to explore. The light causes structure to appear and disappear, and the viewer has the desire to fix the ‘now’ into an organized pattern, but the light shifts constantly, expressing the inevitability of change”.

Painter Sara Twomey works out of her studio in South London and is currently working on new Black Silver and Gold paintings for a solo show in April 2021 in Piacenza, Italy.

Twomey’s travels in Europe, Egypt, and the US have influenced her strong use of colors and geometric shapes.  Restoring stained glass windows in churches in the Channel Islands fostered her interest in material color surface and light, while the idea of optical play with surface planes followed work on a series of Trompe-l’oeil Murals in Ohio USA. Geometric shapes and symbols such as stars and repeated patterns from a recent trip to Egypt made an indelible impression.

In 2000 Twomey returned to England to study fine art. She worked as a studio assistant and manager to the artist Damien Hirst, and during this time she researched surfaces and finishes and the texture and color of “every kind of paint on the planet”.

Towmey has exhibited in various venues in New York, Miami, London, and Italy.
