WALTER FOGEL

Walter Fogel

Walter Fogel is a multi award winning advertising and art photographer based in Angelbachtal. Since 2011, he has been deeply engaged in dance photography, a field in which he has developed a distinctive artistic voice.

A pivotal element in his work is the use of headstand images, which have significantly shaped contemporary dance photography. These sculptural "exclamation marks," emerging from breakdance moves, interact playfully with everyday urban settings. Fogel has captured these dynamic dance sculptures in cities across London, Italy, France, Germany, and other neighboring European countries.

His “upside down” series has earned numerous awards and featured in multiple exhibitions, motivating him to continue evolving this unique artistic direction. Over time, his imagery of various dance forms has become increasingly abstract, developing a visual language of its own one that evokes the rhythm and flow of music through the intentional use of motion blur.

Inspired by conversations with Roland Olbeter (a member of La Fura dels Baus, known for his stage design for Wagner's opera at La Scala in Milan), Fogel has embraced the classic sandwich technique, reinterpreted digitally. Since 2019, he has collaborated closely with ballet dancers, transforming them into stage sets in their own right.

In his most recent works, the dance sculptures continue to evolve becoming more abstract and painterly, blending harmoniously with soft, light-colored backgrounds to create ethereal visual compositions.
