“My arrangements are schematic, inviting the viewer to move into a space of speculation. I rely on our desires for beauty, poetics and seduction.”

-Mahfuzur Rahman

Mahfuzur Rahman, based in Dhaka, Bangladesh thinks of his installations as unfinished inventories of fragments; objects, drawings, paintings, photographs, and other. Inventions are brought together in one frame. They are improvisational sites in which the constructed and the readymade are used to question our making of the world through language and knowledge.

Despite being a full time employee in a large corporation, Rahaman dedicates his time to his craft and artistic perspective on life. His style is a mixture of abstraction and intensely detailed subjects. We see intense colors, heightened scenes of objects that are not often portrayed together. Rahman brings the viewer to consider the absurdity in our way of life. In the use of hues and textures is where he searches for deeper understanding in its purest form, a passionate effort to discover the essence of life.

When I paint, I feel weaves of emotions hitting my soul constantly. Complete work of art gives me a height of pleasure because not only [is it] a painting but it also conveys significant philosophy.

“We supersede our theories with better models and more precise hypotheses because we are driven as much by the search for truth as truth itself. Only once we accept that things are beyond our ken, that we can start where we are and work with what we have, is when life becomes filled with surprise and prospects. My aim is a simple one: to explore the viewpoints we take for granted and communicate the sense of astute wonder we experience when we realize they may be specious.”

- MAHFUZUR RAHMAN

He works mostly in large scale formats, as an additional tool to explore the full depth of feeling in the presence of color. The necessity to accommodate one’s view, forces the spectator to move around each piece – the more immersed the viewer is to the work,  the more they are able to hear their own messages and relive their own feelings.

For a long time now, I have found myself committed to illuminated landscapes. There is an eternal romance between light and color that bathes the landscapes, where the magic of the rays of light that affect the surfaces and explode in colors and textures that give life to the space.
